Besides that, they could erase or damage your data on the hard disk, send your confidential data to other random people by E-mail. And some viruses send themselves to all people in your contacts lists in your E-mail program. - Trojans: They are just like the real Trojan Horse, they look like nice innocent downloadable programs, but they contain other functions that are dangerous. For instance it could install programs on your Personal Computer that monitors your Keyboard, and transmits all you have typed to people who are logging what you are doing including your passwords typed etc. - Worms: Are self replicating programs, they do not infect other files, but they reproduce again and again. In the process they try to send themselves to other PCs in your network or to your relatives by sending E-mails without you knowing. - Spyware: They do not multiply like viruses, these are programs you invite by visiting certain websites and installing their nice programs, they really spy on you and report back to their makers... What are you doing, which site do you visit, key loggers also report your name and passwords. Did you know that these hackers... if your Personal Computer is not protected good enough... are able to use your Personal Computer and thousands of others to send unwanted e-mails (Spam) to millions of e-mail addresses? You need the best and fastest protection available... because without, you are a sitting duck ready to get shot. Did you know that thieves can enter your home... Stealing your Identity through a few invisible thin copper wires called your Internet connection? What are the solutions available... A Personal Computer does not have 1 or 2 doors like your home to enter, but 65,535 doors called Ports. A Firewall is intended to open only certain doors for certain program's. Like your browser has his own Port, other programs have their own, and many Ports are not used, therefore a firewall has to protect all those used and unused doors to prevent unwanted program's to slip in. It sounds easy but some Firewalls protect only against unwanted incoming traffic. In that case Spyware programs who are already inside can freely use those doors and send your private data to the outer world. If you have other family members... with their own Personal Computers + Internet connections, it is the same story. Buy a multi-user license..., than your whole family can be protected also. O, yes of course you can install all kinds of free solutions... Free Firewalls, Free Anti-Virus software, Free Anti-Spyware, some are even part of your Operating System like Windows XP/Vista, but do they really protect you enough? Are they fast enough, do they detect as much as possible? Is your home front door made of cardboard...? or paper with a nice print? Or do you have a solid wood door with locks and maybe even an alarm system? Free protection software is for sure better than no protection at all. But those free software makers leave some holes... that are closed in their other products you have to pay for, and for a reason. Those producers can not stay around for long without earnings, so free software are marketing teasers, to bring you in for the real protection products. You get what you pay for... and if you pay nothing, you will get nothing in the long run. So be prepared.
